NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – During a routine training session at Mount Bundey on Monday, a military vehicle rollover resulted in the death of a 28-year-old Australian Army soldier, with five others sustaining injuries. The Australian Defence Force announced the incident on Tuesday and confirmed that the soldier’s family had been informed. The accident happened at the Mount Bundey Training Area, approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Darwin. Defence appealed for privacy for the affected personnel and their families.

At about 4:20 p.m. on October 5, Northern Territory Police responded to the training zone. Emergency services, including CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance, also attended. Two injured soldiers were transported by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital around 7:30 p.m., while three others were moved by aircraft approximately two hours later. All five soldiers remained hospitalized on Tuesday as the medical teams continued treatment. The medical evacuations from the remote military location were supported by Northern Territory authorities.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, Chief of Army, stated that Defence has launched an investigation into the fatal rollover. Military police secured the scene, and a land accident investigation board will review what occurred. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole mentioned police are assisting Defence and conducting an investigation on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the incident has not yet been disclosed. Coyle emphasized that investigators require time to determine the details before the Army responds to their findings.
Initiation of Defence Inquiry
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen soldier. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also expressed sympathies, describing the loss as a tragic event for the Army. Defence assured support for the families involved in the incident. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also shared condolences and appreciated the emergency teams’ efforts in transporting the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey functions as a prominent Australian Army training location situated south-east of Darwin. It is frequently used by Australian and allied forces for exercises, including live-fire drills. The incident marks the second Australian Army training-related fatality in 2026, following the death of Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a Special Air Service Regiment member, who died in May after a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay. Another paratrooper involved in that incident sustained minor injuries.
Previous Fatalities at Mount Bundey
In 2017, the Mount Bundey Training Area was the scene of another fatal incident involving the Army. Private Jason Challis lost his life during a live-fire urban training exercise. A coronial inquest by the Northern Territory later examined the circumstances of his death. The Department of Defence subsequently pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court for failing to meet workplace health and safety obligations. The recent 2026 rollover is considered a separate event and remains under investigation.
Beyond confirming his age and gender, Defence has not publicly identified the soldier who was killed in Monday’s rollover. Officials have also not disclosed his unit or the specific activity underway at the time. The Australian Defence Force indicated that more information will be shared as it becomes available. Police continue to support the ongoing coronial investigation, while the Army is conducting its internal review. No conclusions have been reached regarding the reasons behind the vehicle rollover or the factors that contributed to the tragedy.
